Many folk I know have been discussing their 2009 challenges and victories and looking forward to what 2010 has in store for them. I’ve felt the need to at least review and refresh, but knew I had to get my thoughts in order first.
This post is just a first pass at doing so for me and this company.
After having, in 2009, what could only be described as a less than stellar year overall (not quite an annus horribilis, but getting there), I’ve come to the realisation that 2010 is the make or break year for me and this business. Either it really clicks, or I have to reimagine what I do and what the business is all about.
The attached mindmap (also embedded below) shows where my head is at with respect to:
- the work I do — what I do, what I want to do, how I do it
- my thinking — all the stuff that fills my mind and where I’m headed with it
- my inspirations — the businesses I look to as exemplars and the individuals I respect for supporting me, inspiring me and calling me on my crap when I say it
- my vision and thoughts about acidlabs — stay or go, grow or remain the same, issues and concerns
It’s a work in progress and will be subject to some major revision over the coming month or so as I bed it down, but in the interests of walking my talk and running the open, collaborative business I preach should be the way we do things, here’s my thoughts.
The list of individuals to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for any number of reasons is long — please look for yourself. If you find yourself or the organisation you work for in my inspirations list, thank you. You have made a difference to me and I appreciate it.
I’m looking for feedback — your ideas, input and views on what I should be doing with my speaking, work and business. This isn’t an exercise in crowdsourcing, we know that isn’t as useful as it seems. Rather, I’m reaching out to the people I trust — my community of readers and collaborating and conversing with you - and looking for your guidance in making me, acidlabs and 2010 the best possible combination.

For what it’s worth, I’ve always respected you as someone who is ahead of their time. Some similar visionaries have been forced to recant or even burnt at the stake, but you’ll be spared that fate! I think there’s a ‘click’ happening. People are finally realising this new fangled web stuff is no longer optional. 2010 will be a strong year for you. Hmmm, i sound like mystic medusa!

Better to be timely than ahead sometimes, I think.

Hi Steve,
Just popped by your site again, and like Kylie, you are definitely the visionary in this space.
However, as you might know, the tangible business of social media is based on effects of the change, and the demand in the new environment.
There are aspects of Web 2.0 that are creating tangible business prospects.
Terence.

Thanks, Terence. Your vote of confidence in me counts for much.
Now, as others have suggested, to clarify this vision into something more solid and comprehensible.

Hi Steve. Thanks for sharing your plans and ideas. Nothing like bouncing an idea around in cyberspace. It seems to make things more tangible, even before others comment!
I enjoy your speaking. I really, really like your writing. I hope you plan to do lots and lots of writing! In particular, I enjoy when you write about the things that seem to get you ticking, the things that social media marketers and others need to understand about trust, connections, whuffie — about teh people being what matters.
By the way, you have mentioned some interesting peeps on that list. I’d love it if you wrote some posts about them, why they inspire you etc.
I hope this is the *make* year not the break year.
Happy New Year @trib!

Maybe rather than a single ‘mentor’, what you might look for is an ‘advisory board’ which you could use as a sounding board (in the other sense of the word!), for advice, and for mentoring.
I’m a little shy about being someone else’s mentor, but as one of the people you mentioned by name, I would be honoured to be a part of a group of people who served that role and perhaps more … it seems James Governor would be similarly willing

Ric, a group of trusted advisors around me that could offer direction would be awesome. How I do that, is an interesting question.
