I guess one of the underlying themes here is, as people who care about the social impact of all things digital, what about those who don't have access to the internet and/or social media?

No doubt much has been written/reseached on this (but probably not enough...) but if digital is the great connector, what about those, for socio-economic or whatever reasons, don't get the chance to participate and, hence, make choices...?

A lateral perspective to your post perhaps, Stephen, but one I am sure you will have an observation on...

Catherine, thanks for the comment. Your experience, is exactly what I'm talking about. We are (at least many of us), shifting to brokering our lives via connection to communities online.

There's no question that the digital divide still exists (and for some it's awful and hard to solve), but it's increasingly about choice.

You're a Boomer, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Xer. Yet we're here and engaged and frankly (at least I think you are) engaging.

Time for a few wake-up calls, I think.

My current experience supports your view.

I'm on a partial media fast while in the United States: I don't have a phone. A personal pilgrimage which is producing an interesting experience I'll write about later.

Even so, you don't need a land land, mobile phone or outrageous communication bills to remain connected.

WiFi is readily available in the United States, all one needs to do is step into a local cafe or bar and you're on a free WiFi hotspot. Only yesterday I opened skype to talk to family over lunch and read the #media140 sitting in a real greasy spoon.

All that out of the mouth of a late end baby boomer who's been on skype for years and blogging since 2001.

Did I hear you say the reporter in question calls herself an early adopter?
