I gave the opening keynote yesterday at Michael Specht’s HR Futures conference. Michael asked me to speak on the recent trip I made to the US to attend TED and reflect of the experience, what I learned there and it’s applicability to business and HR. I was only too happy to help Michael out. He’s […]
Enterprise 2.0 Road Trip
The next few days, I’ll be away from home doing several pieces of work that point to a growing awareness of Enterprise 2.0 as an important set of practices and technologies for business, particularly in current challenging economic times. First, tomorrow, I’ll be at Ross Dawson’s excellent Enterprise 2.0 Executive Forum at Luna Park in Sydney […]
Blocking never works
I’ve talked about this issue ad nauseum in the past but it’s reared its head again in this article in the News Limited press (Brisbane’s Courier Mail, to be accurate). So, what am I talking about? Businesses blocking access to social tools in the workplace. In this case, Facebook gets a mention, but it applies to […]
Barry Schwartz on a new wisdom for business
Like my friend, Tara Hunt, I thought Barry Schwartz’s talk on practical wisdom at TED 2009 was brilliant. It was definitely one of my favorites. You really should watch it and see for yourself how this man has imagined a kinder, better world for business where moral fortitude is a key underpinning. I am strongly […]
Company or person? The Twitter dilemma…
… or, I’d say, not so much of a dilemma really. This question arises time and again and many opinions have been put forth. A quick search on Google can find a dozen variants on the theme or more. Given I was asked by Tim Malone to explain my position when in retweeting Andrew Barnett […]
Breaking away from TED
I still have a lot of session summaries to write up (or perhaps I won’t as it’s pretty easy to find great alternatives to me, such as my new friend, Chel O’Reilly). But what I will do is try to summarize what this ride has been like. I first became aware of TED around 5 years ago, […]
TED DIY
While I’m behind on the main session posts as I type this (three sessions behind now…), this is worth highlighting. One of the unique things (and there are many) about TED@PalmSprings is the opportunity for audience members to get on stage and share their ideas worth spreading. This morning, a bunch of us did just […]
TED Session 5 — Understand
Things got better for me in this session. The kickoff speaker, Nina Jablonski had what I think was the best stage presence so far. Others will disagree, but I really liked her — I’d totally study Anthropology if she was one of my professors. Nina Jablonski this month is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth Origin […]
TED Session 4 — See
Today started oddly for me. Tired after too few hours sleep (I was on Canberra time last night), the first session, while certainly interesting didn’t feel like it resoonated with me quite so much as the previous day. I am neither artist, scientist nor musician and the morning was dominated by these disciplines. Don’t get […]
Me and Jill
I met one of my musical favorites today at TED@PalmSprings — Jill Sobule. And, while I look like a complete goober in the photo, I’m very happy with it. Maybe I can get one in daylight tomorrow so I can avoid the inevitable blinking that comes with a flash going off.
