I'm not in the "paid speaker" stratosphere yet, but like my colleagues <a href="http://leehopkins.net/2008/01/01/its-flattering-but/" rel="nofollow">Lee Hopkins</a> and <a href="http://trevorcook.typepad.com/weblog/2008/01/lee-hopkins-tel.html" rel="nofollow">Trevor Cook</a>, I am mostly happy to participate for covered expenses. If I keep getting gigs, I may need to talk to someone like Mark Pesce about how his arrangement works. I know there are events for which he has travel, accommodation and expenses covered and is paid what I'd consider a basic rate fee for prep time and speaking.
