I'm wondering where the evidence is that suggests that "Generation-Y (and us Gen Xers too) are used to having social computing tools and rely on them for both social and business needs."

...know of any actual research in this area?

Yankee Group just published a free report on how IT departments should be dealing with consumerization in the enterprise. It's called "Zen and The Art of Rogue Employee Management."

The premise is that the traditional IT response to consumerization doesn't work and we outline a different, more accepting, decentralized, and dare I say zen-like? philosophy of IT that is better aligned with technology adoption in today's enterprises.

If you're interested in this topic I'd suggest you take a look.

An already sinking Automaker, General Motors (GM), is on top of their priorities to block such sites from its employees. I am sure this type of a move does not have any effect on the baby-boomers but it will definitely cause some major generational differences amongst their future work force. From a business standpoint, if I were on the Board of Directors, I would analyze corporate operations of a modern day business like Google and see what kind of an environment can be created in-house for a productive and bright future!
