Verifiable digital identity goes Web 2.0

FindMeOn

FindMeOn is a new player in the digital identity space, seeking to aggregate your several digital identites into a single place. On the surface, it doesn’t look terribly different from onxiam.com. Dig deeper and it proves to be something else altogether, with a much bigger agenda and grander plan. Still, do we need more players in this space? On top of projects such as OpenID (who has a different focus, granted)?

The problem of verifiable digital identity remains an issue. Certificates, keys, PKI and the like, once touted as panacea for this issue have failed miserably. Uptake by the average user is virtually nonexistent, and for good reason - these technologies are difficult to grasp for the masses. And they are terribly complex from a technical point-of-view.
Sure, they are easy to use for us geeks, but ask yourself, could your Mum cope with digital identity management on a day-to-day basis? I didn’t think so.

If FindMeOn can get it right, and make their process usable by the Boomers and early GenXers who still struggle with anything more complex than email, IE and Word, they may be onto something.
